Among those celebrating their GCSE results yesterday was Benenden student Verity Lees, who is not only talented academically but also an outstanding fencer, competing at National level and most recently coming 3rd in the British Youth Championships in Sheffield.
“I am really happy with my results. I’ve worked hard and, with my parents’, teachers’ and coach’s help, learnt to manage my priorities so I could focus on my GCSEs in the build up to the exams. Once exams were over, I have been able to get back to the gym every day to train ahead of the start of the fencing season in September.”
Speaking about how she manages her time and commitment to both her studies and her sport, Verity says: “The key is to spend quality time on each. The amount of time doesn’t matter so much. I always have a list and remain focused so that I can manage my time effectively. Know what you’re going to do and go for it!”
Her hard work and discipline have certainly been rewarded! Looking ahead as she embarks on Sixth Form at Benenden where she will be studying Maths, Economics and Politics, Verity says: “Two of my A Level subjects are new subjects for me to study but I am really interested in them. I am excited to be joining the Sixth Form House and being with my friends.”
Unphased by the increased level of independence Sixth Form will bring, Verity feels confident that the discipline and autonomy she has learnt as a successful athlete will transfer to her A Level studies easily. We wish her every success in the new season as she moves to the U18 category and competes for selection to international competitions in Italy and Belgium later this year.
Benenden is holding a Sixth Form open evening on 12 September and several open days throughout the Autumn Term. More information and booking available at www.benenden.school/opendays
