We have embarked on an amazing journey with our partner, Benenden Guangzhou, to enter the prestigious iGEM Competition. Eight of our Upper Fifth students will work alongside 14 students from BBSG to form a joint team.
The iGEM Competition (International Genetically Engineered Machine) is a global annual synthetic-biology challenge in which student teams design, build, test and present original biological-engineering projects that tackle real-world issues. The competition’s themed “Villages”, such as the Space Village, Industry Village and Environment Village, bring together teams from around the world to collaborate on innovative solutions to some of society’s biggest challenges.
This is a year-long project, during which the students will plan, research, design and develop their idea before presenting their work in Paris at the iGEM Grand Jamboree, where prizes and medals are awarded. In this first venture into iGEM, we are ambitiously aiming for a Gold medal, pushing the limits of innovation and celebrating the brilliance of Benenden’s young female scientists.

After week 1 Amber wrote “This week has been super exciting as 8 of us from year 11 are joining the iGEM competition together with the Benenden Guangzhou team! We have already had two meetings this week with the BBSG students and teachers, where we got to learn more about the competition, and are now beginning to brainstorm project ideas. Everyone’s full of energy and curiosity, and we all can’t wait to see how our ideas will grow.”
