Valerie Excels at Summer Science Academy

Fifth (Year 10) student Valerie was selected to attend the prestigious Science Academy of Young Talent summer course at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She tells us about her experience:

“This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a science-related summer course in Hong Kong, focusing on amazing inventions and their impact on the world. The program focused on the history of innovation, exploring different groundbreaking inventions like x-ray and nuclear fission. We investigated how these inventions helped revolutionize society and reshaped our daily lives.

One of the most interesting parts was understanding the problem-solving processes that led to these innovations. Learning about the discovery of X-rays, it was amazing to learn how this invention greatly improved medicine by allowing us to see inside the human body without any invasive procedures. The lectures on nuclear fission were also very fascinating, showing how this discovery led to nuclear energy, which provides a lot of electricity, and also raising important ethical questions about its use in weapons. At the end of the summer school, I was honored to be awarded a distinction. This course taught me many interesting facts and made me appreciate how science and innovation can create real change. It has motivated me to continue pursuing my interest in science, with a focus on creating sustainable solutions for the future.”
