As part of Benenden’s innovative Soil to Supper programme – one of several new courses introduced for Years 7 and 8 this year – we invited food writer and chef Kathy Slack to speak to students, parents and staff.
Arriving with baskets full of colourful fresh vegetables, her talk explored sustainability, food production and the importance of understanding where our food comes from.
The afternoon continued with Kathy judging the Year 8s’ sustainable restaurant projects, which students have been working on for the past ten weeks, followed by the Year 7s presenting their posters and projects on nutrition and sustainability.
The day culminated in an exciting cooking session, with Kathy leading the way. Students and parents worked together to create beautiful spring rolls.
It was an inspirational visit and we look forward to Kathy returning in June to speak to the remaining classes.
