Space Engineer Inspires Girls

This week’s Meet The Scientist webinar saw Benenden host one of the UK’s most successful female space engineers, Chris Brockley-Blatt of UCL’s Mullard Space Science lab.Chris has previously worked on Beagle 2, which went to Mars in 2003, and the James Webb Space Telescope, due for launch in 2021.She is currently the lead project engineer on the Spire infra-red instrumentation for the Herschel space observatory and project manager on the European Space Agency’s project to manufacture a cryogenic cooler for use with X-ray detectors in space.Girls and staff enjoyed hearing from Chris about her journey to becoming a space engineer and asked a range of questions on engineering in space and space travel.
