Six One Students Transport to 1920s America

Six One (Year 12) Language and Literature students have been studying demographics and sociological features of early 1920s America, with a focus on upper middle-class females, ahead of their study of the set text The Great Gatsby. Using this knowledge, they are now writing letters to problem pages in role as a 17-year-old in 1923 – finding a suitable boyfriend, worries about skincare and society’s pressure to be beautiful all feature. The students have to write with the lexis and syntax of the 1920s, and it’s interesting to know that despite linguistic change, the concerns of teenage girls are a constant!
