On the day of the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, staff and students at Benenden School united to mark the occasion.
Pupils watched the television coverage of the funeral in their Houses along with their support staff. Younger pupils were then invited for a walk which culminated in the planting of roses and crocuses in the Seniors’ Courtyard, in the Queen’s memory.
The School was joined on the day by BBC South East, who spoke to the Headmistress about HRH The Princess Royal’s time at Benenden – during which the Queen visited the School at least twice – and to Sixth Formers about the lasting influence of the Royal Family on the School community. Pupils in the Upper Fourth (Year 8) were invited to reflect on the significance of the planting they took part in, and the magnitude of the loss of our great monarch.
A Book of Condolence remains open in the School’s Entrance Hall, for members of the Benenden community to share their messages.
