Record Number of Delegates at Benenden Model UN

Benenden recently hosted its sixteenth Model UN conference, with a higher number of visiting delegates than it has ever seen before.

The event comprised over 400 students and staff and the standard of debate was extremely high. After welcome refreshments in the Jat Atrium, the Opening Ceremony in the Centenary Hall got BMUN16 off to a fantastic start.

For the remainder of the day a huge amount of fantastic debate was had, with each committee led ably by Benenden Chairs assisted by Chairs from other schools. Topics being discussed varied hugely, including debates on: The Question of Countering the Illicit Arms Trade and Promoting Responsible Arms Transfers, The Question of Supporting Refugees Affected by COVID-19 in South American Countries, The Question of Ethical AI regulation and Misuse of Emerging Intelligent Technologies, and The Question of Promoting Women’s Rights and Gender Equality in Conflict-Affected Areas.

Security Council debated the The Question of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, a question selected back in February, before they realised quite how prescient this would be. Overall BMUN16 once more showed Benenden MUN at its best.
