More than 80 Fifths braved the freezing conditions and the snow as part of a practice expedition for their Bronze DofE earlier this month. Four groups walked a 12km linear route either from Wadhurst to Bewl Water or Hawkhurst to Bewl Water carrying full kit bags – all coping admirably with the terrible weather conditions.
The girls all completed the first day’s walking but the staff decided that the weather conditions dictated that we move the camping to the school site, which eventually led to the girls sleeping in SPLASH. All the participants were fantastic, displaying a great sense of humour and a huge amount of resilience.
The girls have now passed their Bronze Award practice expedition and have to prepare for their assessed expedition in June. The current Gold Award participants will be heading to the Lake District over the Easter Break to conduct their practice expedition. Next year we will be running the delivery of the Gold Award expedition in-house: Almaas Yusuf has been working hard to prepare a new expedition and more details will follow in due course. This has been a successful term with three girls achieving the Gold Award and ten achieving their Bronze Award.
