Benenden Welcomes Gyles Brandreth for Inspiring Talk on Language, Literature and Happiness

Students and staff at Benenden were thrilled to welcome the renowned writer, broadcaster, and former Member of Parliament, Gyles Brandreth, for an inspiring visit on Friday 20 September. Mr Brandreth, known for his witty insights into language and storytelling, engaged students in a lively discussion about the secrets of happiness and the power of words and literature.

During the event, led by Head Girl Isolde, Mr Brandreth shared his research on uncovering the ‘Seven Secrets of Happiness’ punctuated with stories from his extensive career in media and politics, offering students a behind-the-scenes glimpse at his experiences in Westminster and as a broadcaster on shows such as Countdown and The One Show and his podcast series, Rosebud. He also discussed his lifelong passion for the English language, stressing the importance of effective communication, creativity, and a love for reading.

Headteacher Rachel Bailey said: “It was an honour to welcome Gyles Brandreth to Benenden. His energy, humour, and insight truly resonated with our students, and I’m sure they have been left inspired by his words. We are grateful for his visit and for the valuable life lessons he shared.”

The students had the opportunity to ask Mr Brandreth questions, ranging from his favourite books to his favourite jumpers, and even received a sneak peek into his latest projects. Many were particularly excited to hear his anecdotes about working with some of the country’s leading comedians, actors, and political figures.

Reflecting on the event, Mr Brandreth said,I am so excited to be at Benenden today where the sun is shining on this brilliant school and it’s been the most amazing visit. The school is creating our future leaders in every field, whether they are going to be artists, accountants, doctors, pilots, space people.  I’m thrilled to be here.
