We were delighted to welcome former Business Secretary Greg Clark to Benenden.A Conservative MP since 2005, Mr Clark spent several years in the Cabinet, most recently as Business Secretary, and was a high-profile critic of a no-deal Brexit. He is current chair of the Science and Technology Committee. In a wide-ranging (and socially distanced) interview in the Theatre, Mr Clark answered questions from Ali Harber, Deputy Head – Academic, and from the girls themselves.Issues covered included the latest stage in the Brexit negotiations – unsurprisingly, considering he had just come off a Conservative Parliamentary Party call with the Prime Minister over the latest controversial Internal Market Bill.In addition, the evening included Mr Clark’s views on the UK response to Covid, being briefly ejected from the party because of his Brexit stance, the robustness of elections in the face of external interference and whether Donald Trump should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.Afterwards, Mr Clark said: “It was great, a good way to end a turbulent political week, with very well informed questions, at least as well informed as I experience in the House of Commons!“There were very thoughtful questions and a lovely ambience of warmth and good humour.“It’s probably the case that there were several potential challengers for future Cabinet Members in the audience.”
