Alina’s essay wins first prize in the Spring 2025 Social Justice Awards

Many congratulations to Six One student Alina whose essay arguing for proactive AI regulation was awarded first prize in the Spring 2025 Social Justice Awards.

Alina says: “I was honoured to be selected as a first prize winner of the Spring 2025 Social Justice Awards, an international youth writing competition that recognises bold, original thinking on urgent global issues. My essay responded to the prompt: “AI is a rare case where I think we need to be proactive in regulation rather than reactive.” – Elon Musk. I approached this from the lens of how the gig economy’s male-centric algorithms exacerbate gender inequalities, demonstrating how algorithmic discrimination has real, tangible impacts on the lives of women via employment platforms.

Drawing from a wide range of academic literature and real-world case studies, I argued for proactive AI regulation that embeds fairness from the outset. Throughout this process, I improved my academic writing, research, and critical thinking skills, and was happy that my writing could gain exposure through this platform.”
