Glossary of  Benenden Terms

Sometimes it can feel as if members of the Benenden Community are speaking their very own language – with certain words and phrases that they take for granted seeming very unusual to new people! While we’re sure you’ll quickly get familiar with all the new terms, this list should help you get started.

Hm (Housemistress/Housemaster): This person has overall responsibility for the House.

DHm (Deputy Housemistress/Housemaster): Deputises when the Hm is off duty.

Matron: In charge of the physical health of pupils as well as the fabric of the building.

Tutor: Gives academic and pastoral support to each tutee.

Top Lax/Park Pitches: Where Sports lessons take place and Lacrosse is played.

The Ville: Benenden Village.

Prayers: Morning assembly.

House Order: When the House comes together for group messages.

Layer: The students in your House in your Year Group.

Dorm: The room in which you sleep at night.

LASS: The School Shop.

Big Sister: Six One student who will look out for you.

House Mother: Student who will help you in House.

Year Group Nomenclature:

  • Fourth (Year 7)
  • Upper Fourth (Year 8)
  • Lower Fifth (Year 9)
  • Fifth (Year 10)
  • Upper Fifth (Year 11)
  • Six One (Year 12)
  • Six Two (Year 13)
